How valuable are Network Consulting Services in today’s digital landscape?

I've been digging into the topic of Network Consulting Services lately, and it seems like more and more businesses—whether startups or established enterprises—are leaning on external consultants to design, optimize, and secure their networks.
From what I understand, these services cover things like:
  • Assessing and upgrading existing network infrastructure
  • Ensuring security (especially with rising cyber threats)
  • Supporting cloud migrations and hybrid models
  • Optimizing performance for remote/hybrid workplaces
But here's what I've been wondering 👇
  • Do companies really need consultants for this, or can in-house IT teams handle it just fine with the right training?
  • For smaller businesses, is it worth the investment, or does it end up being overkill?
  • On the flip side, could outsourcing network consulting actually save money long-term by preventing costly downtime and security breaches?
  • Has anyone here actually worked with a network consulting firm (or been one!)? What was your experience—smooth sailing or frustrating?

Personally, I can see the appeal: sometimes having an outside perspective exposes blind spots you'd never notice internally. But I also wonder if consultants tend to recommend "bigger" changes than what's really necessary.
