Are 2x4 flood trays really worth it?

I'm in the process of putting together an automated watering system, and I have to say, the flood trays are the most expensive component. The least expensive option I came across is $70, but it doesn't have a BPA-free guarantee. Bootstrap Farmer offers theirs for $100. When I factor in two racks, my total supply costs reach $300 before adding the trays, and then it skyrockets to $1,100 afterward

It's crazy that $400 per rack is just for the trays. That said, I really believe the automation will be worth it in the end. It just hits a little hard on the wallet

Yeah, the price of quality flood trays can definitely be a shock, especially when you're building out multiple racks.
It's tough to swallow that upfront cost, but like you said, the long-term benefits of automation often make it worthwhile.
Have you tried looking for used commercial trays locally, or even considering DIY options using pond liner for custom sizes if you're handy?
Though I think that adds complexity.

Have you looked into repurposing food-grade bins or making DIY inserts to cut costs a bit? Could be a way to save while keeping things BPA-free.

Yeah, those tray costs sting when you're scaling up, but once it's all running smooth, the time and labor savings will pay you back fast, the quality trays might actually be the better investment in the future
